For TAF2021, Martin's work takes a new direction, using abstraction to explore her themes of memory and nostalgia. Moody and compelling, light and dark contrast form an illusion of three dimensional imagery suggesting layers of autobiographical memory imprinted on her chosen medium.
Johannesburg based Sue Martin has been honing her painting and printmaking skills since the 1980s when she completed a BA Fine Arts degree at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg (now University of KwaZulu-Natal).
In the intervening twenty years since Martin's first solo exhibition in 1999, she has participated in numerous group exhibitions and Art Fairs across South Africa. In addition, Martin has produced several successful solo exhibitions, most recently at the White River Gallery in March this year. Her works presented in "My African Garden" are testimony to Martin's collaborative spirit, working closely with Bevan de Wet at his studio in Jhb.
Experimental in nature, Martin challenges her own boundaries by engaging with a variety of techniques and media to produce her compelling and deeply personal artworks. Working from her Johannesburg-based studio, she continues to exhibit her work extensively with various galleries such as Knysna Fine Art, Candice Berman, Artist Proof Studio and the White River Gallery.
