“I love to see contrast, I love to see the light striking something like a tree or a rock. That's generally later in the day." Walter also said that balance is an important aspect of his work, getting the balance right between light and shadow, whether it’s capturing the light that falls on a rock, tree or cloud. Where the light falls within his composition is important."
“It is also a challenge in itself to get the colours right.” Starting his canvases off with a Burnt Sienna wash, Walter then builds his composition, working loosely and stepping back as much as possible (the reason he has to work in a long studio!). Walter also makes use of a pallet knife to build layers on his canvas.
