2024 Mozambican Artists’ Residency

The week from the 18th to the 22nd of November, White River Gallery proudly hosted our second annual cyanotype residency. We welcomed Claudio Lucas Pola, Luísa Samuel, Ouri Pota Chapata Pacamutondo, Pinto José Zulo, and Zadoc José Nhacocome, winners of the Better Futures Awards hosted by Galeria Kulungwana in Maputo, for a week of creative exploration. Guided by master printmaker Cloudia Rivett-Carnac of Chocolate Ink Studios and director of The Printing Girls, the workshop provided a platform for these talented Mozambican artists to experiment with new techniques and connect with fellow creatives across borders.

Throughout the week, the artists immersed themselves in the cyanotype process—where sunlight reveals striking blue-and-white photographic prints—and explored Tetra Pak printmaking, an eco-friendly intaglio-inspired method that uses recycled cartons. These sustainable and innovative techniques sparked exciting artistic expressions and brought new dimensions to their practice:
