Reuben Mpangane

Reuben Mpangane (b.1953, BA Fine Arts, University of South Africa)

Reuben Mpangane embarked on his formal education in the arts at the University of South Africa, earning a BA in Fine Arts. He furthered his studies with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Pretoria and completed a Higher Education Diploma (Postgraduate) along with an Art Specialization Certificate from UNISA.

Reuben’s career is marked by a blend of artistic and educational achievements. In 1988, he held his first solo exhibition at Nelspruit Art Gallery, which was a sold-out success. His second exhibition in 1989 at the same venue further established his reputation. That same year, he held a notable solo exhibition and art workshop at Kanyamazane Hall alongside Nat Ntombela. Throughout his artistic journey, Reuben expanded his focus from Township Art to broader themes of social cohesion, informed by his experiences of township life during a tumultuous era. He recalls his nights in Kabokweni filled with nightmares of violence, including the tragic political funeral procession in 1985 when an ANCYL member was shot at Mataffin.

Reuben’s creative medium has evolved over the years, incorporating recycled and upcycled plastics into vibrant collage artworks, where he layers colors to achieve unique tones and textures. His dedication to this medium reflects a commitment to environmental consciousness and innovation. His artworks are part of prestigious collections, including the Mpumalanga Legislature Building, Parliament in Cape Town, and DBSA Midrand, among others.

Beyond his artistic practice, Reuben has made significant contributions as an educator and project manager. After retiring in 2016 as a Circuit Manager for the Lydenburg Circuit, where he achieved top management honors, he continued to empower communities. He serves as Project Manager for Emathalente Training NPO, where he dedicates eight days per month to teaching craft skills to people living with disabilities in Mbombela. His workshops span various disciplines, from arts and crafts to metal design, including functional metal-wood furniture.

Notable among his community efforts, Reuben facilitated arts and culture workshops for educators in the Gert Sibande and Sekhukhune districts through the MTN/Umbalabala Training initiative from 2008 to 2012. His commitment to social impact also led him to study classic jazz piano music online, adding another layer to his creative pursuits.

Reuben’s artwork has been exhibited both locally and nationally. In 2018, he participated in a group exhibition at Mbombela Civic Centre alongside Fikile Skhosana, and he has exhibited at venues such as Innibos and Tupelo in Cape Town.

Reflecting on his vision, Reuben shares: “The park in White River will continue to be our space for art and craft, where creativity becomes a bridge for empowerment and healing.” His life and work exemplify a dedication to art, education, and the upliftment of his community.
